Located on the south shore of one of the three largest man-made reservoirs in the nation, Lake Sakakawea State Park offers a wide range of water based recreational activities and facilities.  The park has a full service marina and two boat ramps providing access to the big lake, no matter the water level.

The western-most segment of the 3,200 mile North Country National Scenic Trail intersects the Lewis & Clark Trail at the park.  The park has three miles of hiking trails and along with hiking there are mountain biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities.

A short distance from the park, about a mile, is the Garrison Dam where visitors can visit the power generation facility and the North Dakota Game and Fish fisheries operation.  The North Country Trail provides an excellent vantage point for viewing Garrison Dam and Scoria Bay.  The scoria, found along the Missouri River and farther west in the North Dakota Badlands, was created when seams of coal caught fire and baked the surrounding sand and clay into hard, red natural brick.
